MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia finished the regular season ranked 12th in the USA Today Coaches’ and 13th in the Associated Press polls released today.
The Mountaineers (10-2) jumped three spots in the coaches’ poll and two spots in the AP poll after Saturday night’s 41-39 triple-overtime win over Rutgers at Milan Puskar Stadium. It was the eighth time under Coach Rich Rodriguez that West Virginia has defeated a nationally ranked opponent. Saturday’s game was the 125th time the Mountaineers have faced a nationally rated team since the Associated Press began ranking teams in 1936.
In addition to West Virginia, the Big East had two other teams in the final regular season rankings. Louisville (11-1) is fifth in the AP poll and sixth in the coaches’ poll while Rutgers is 16th in AP and 17th in coaches’.
Once the BCS releases its pool of teams later this afternoon, West Virginia will know its bowl destination: either the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., to face Georgia Tech or the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, to play Oregon State.
The Gator Bowl is played on Jan. 1 while the Sun Bowl is Dec. 29.
