MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track & field team opened its indoor season with the Holiday Classic on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the WVU Shell Building.
“The biggest thing is that the season has finally started,” says sixth year coach Jeff Huntoon. “It was great to get out there and compete after eight weeks of training.”
Fifth year senior Jessica Czaikowski had a successful start to the season with victories in both the 60 meter dash (7.58) and the 60 meter hurdles (8.67). Freshman April Rotilio was close behind Czaikowski in the dash with a second place finish (7:82), while senior Abbie Stechschulte followed Czaikowski to the finish line in the hurdles race with a third place time of 8.81.
Rotilio completed her first meet as a Mountaineer with a third place finish in the 200 meter dash (26.29).
“Our freshmen are going to have a huge impact on the team this season,” says Huntoon.
The Mountaineers took first and second in the 800 meter run. Sophomore Karly Hamric won the race with a time of 2:25.08. Junior Roshawna Mongold followed in second with a time of 2:29.46.
The distance runners also had a nice day for WVU. Junior Alison Spiker won the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:46.33. Sophomore teammate Kerry Davis ran to a third place finish with a time of 11:24.00.
Senior Alexis Noel came up big for the Mountaineers in the field events, taking second in the long jump (5.42 meters) and first in the triple jump (11.63 meters).
Sophomore Lashawna Black ended the day with a second place finish in the shot put (12.70).
The Mountaineers now have a month off before they face another opponent. The team will next travel to Kent, Ohio, for the Black Squirrel Classic on January 12-13.
