MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University baseball coach Greg Van Zant today announced the 2007 baseball schedule. The 59-game schedule features 33 home games at Hawley Field in Morgantown.
“We are extremely excited for our upcoming schedule and it will be a challenge for us,” Van Zant said. “Our players are looking forward to getting back on the field.”
West Virginia will open the season on Feb. 16-18, by hosting the Cleveland State Vikings in a three-game series in Winston-Salem, N.C., at the Winston-Salem Warthogs’ Ernie Shore Field.
The Mountaineers’ will then make back-to-back trips to Conway, S.C., for the Baseball at the Beach Tournament and the Coastal Carolina Tournament on the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March.
West Virginia then returns to Morgantown for a home-opening doubleheader with Niagara on March 6. That game will be the first of 18 straight home games at Hawley Field in March before entering BIG EAST play.
WVU has five BIG EAST road series against Louisville, South Florida, Notre Dame, Villanova and Connecticut. The Mountaineers’ four slated BIG EAST home series include Seton Hall, Cincinnati, St. John’s and Georgetown. WVU also has two home and home series with ACC opponent Maryland and MAC school Ohio.
First team all-BIG EAST selection Justin Jenkins, Tyler Kuhn and freshman All-America Adam White are the only starting field players returning and look to lead an inexperienced club back to the BIG EAST tournament. Michael Burger also returns from last year's lineup as the team's designated hitter.
