MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University basketball coach John Beilein has announced the signing of John Flowers to a national letter of intent for the 2007-08 academic year.
"John is a versatile, athletic forward who is a blue-collar type of player," says Beilein. "He has outstanding focus, can slash to the basket, is a tough defender and finds ways to score. John can score points easily and also score the old-fashioned way with hard work."
A 6-foot-7, 195-pound native of Waldorf, Md., Flowers is currently a senior at St. Mary's Ryken in Leonardtown, Md. He previously attended Thomas Stone High before transferring to St. Mary's Ryken for the start of his junior year.
Flowers averaged 17.5 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks per game as a junior at St. Mary's Ryken, a member of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. According to WCAC transfer rules, Flowers was forced to sit out until the start of the second semester in January.
As a junior, Flowers was named All-Extra Basketball Player of the Year and third-team All-Met by the Washington Post. He was named first team all-conference by the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. Flowers also participates for the DC Blue Devils, an AAU squad.
Rivals.com rates Flowers the 134th-best player in the country and the 35th-best power forward.
Flowers is the son of Nate Flowers and Pam Kelly. His mother played forward at Louisiana Tech from 1979-82. She was a three-time All-American, the first player in school history to score 2,000 points and still holds the NCAA tournament record for most free throws made in one game with 12 in 1982.
