Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall to Cardinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Louisville today at the WVU Coliseum.
The Cardinals (17-6, 10-1) won the match 3-1 (34-32, 30-21, 28-30, 30-17).
West Virginia (2-26, 1-10) took control of game one early. The Mountaineers led 11-3 before Louisville made a comeback. The Cardinals recorded six consecutive points to lose the gap 11-9, but WVU quickly retaliated. Louisville fought hard to tie the game 28-28. Both teams exchanged points until the Cardinals came out on top 34-32.
Convinced to come out strong in game two, Louisville quickly advanced to a 12-5 lead. Led by six kills from outside hitter Justine Landi and four digs from outside hitter Svetlana Dukule, the Cardinals took game two 30-21.
After trailing Louisville by just a few points in game three, West Virginia turned on the heat down the stretch. A final kill from middle blocker Delie Marsonek propelled the Mountaineers over the Cardinals 30-28.
WVU was down 3-9 early in game four. Despite a valiant effort, the team fell short and Louisville recorded a 30-17 win. Landi had a game-high six kills and five digs for the Cardinals in the win. Libero Aurora Ebert-Santos also contributed five digs for the Mountaineers.
Outside hitter Kristina Gallahan led the Mountaineers this afternoon with 14 kills and 15 points. Setter Kailee Goold totaled 42 assists while Ebert-Santos contributed 18 digs.
West Virginia will return to action at the WVU Coliseum when it takes on Cincinnati at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, in the Mountaineers’ final home match of the season.
