MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University wrestling team continues its 2006 tournament season Dec. 1-2, when it travels to Primm, Nev., to compete at the 25th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
The prestigious tournament returns to Primm’s Star of the Desert Arena this season. Some of the nation’s top collegiate wrestlers from over 45 different schools will take center stage at the event.
The all-day event features some of the nation’s toughest teams including Arizona State, Cornell, Edinboro, Hofstra, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn and Wisconsin.
Last season the Mountaineers finished eighth out of 52 teams with returners Brandon Rader (141) and Kurt Brenner (174) taking third each. David Jauregui (149) also placed at the tournament, finishing sixth.
West Virginia is off to a solid beginning so far in 2006 having already wrestled at the WVU Open and taking third at the Navy Classic. Rader and 197-pounder Jared Villers are both off to undefeated starts as they are 9-0 and 7-0, respectively. Zac Fryling (157) is out to a 7-1 start, while heavyweight Dustin Rogers has jumped out to a 5-1 record after wrestling in only one match last season.
This weekend’s tournament is the team’s last tune-up before the Mountaineers open their dual meet slate with Duquesne at the WVU Coliseum on Dec. 15.
