Women's Basketball: Upset Bid Falls Short

LOS ANGELES – No. 12-rated Texas A&M overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat West Virginia 55-52 in the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Tournament at Gersten Pavilion Saturday evening.
The Aggies got 18 points from Morenike Atunrase and 16 points from A’Quonesia Franklin to improve to 4-0.
West Virginia (2-3) led 34-29 with 14:19 left in the game on a Chakhia Cole jumper before Texas A&M used an 8-0 run to take a 37-24 lead.
The Mountaineers were able to pull to within two, 51-49, on a Cole free throw before the Aggies scored four straight to make it 55-49.
Olayinka Sanni scored a game-high 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting. The junior center also had 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers. Chakhia Cole had 11 rebounds to go with 9 points.
West Virginia committed 29 turnovers while Texas A&M had 20.
The Aggies won despite being out-rebounded 39-24 and making only 19 of their 48 field goal tries. The Mountaineers were 1 of 8 from 3-point range.
It was West Virginia’s second opportunity to knock off an established program, falling 60-56 to Virginia Tech on Nov. 13, in Baton Rouge, La.
WVU will play the loser of the Loyola Marymount-American game on Saturday at 5 pm (ET).
WWVU FM-92 will carry the game live in Morgantown.
