MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Scott Jones’ goal with seven minutes left in the second overtime lifted UNC Greensboro to a 2-1 victory over No. 6-seeded West Virginia in an NCAA tournament second round match at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va., Wednesday night.
UNCG, riding the momentum of a 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday night in Blacksburg, got on the board first early in the second half when Randi Patterson knocked in his 13th goal of the season off a Jones assist at the 51:18 mark.
West Virginia had two great chances to put points on the board with a pair of penalty kicks, but the Mountaineers couldn’t convert. The first by Dan Stratford at 54:37 was turned away on an exceptional defensive play by Spartan goal keeper Nate Berry.
The second penalty kick attempt by Pat Carroll at 64:30 sailed wide left of an open net with Berry guessing wrong.
West Virginia finally knotted the match at one at 69:40 when Chris Wittig tallied his second goal of the season. Carroll was credited with an assist on the goal.
Both teams endured sloppy playing conditions from a steady rain the eventually ended late in the match.
West Virginia was credited with 14 fouls and was cited with two yellow cards, while the Southern Conference champions had 21 fouls and three yellows.
The Mountaineers had six corner kicks to UNCG’s four.
WVU senior goal keeper Nick Noble turned away four Spartan shots on goal while Berry was credited with eight saves.
The Mountaineers had a 22 to 16 advantage in shots.
West Virginia was hosting an NCAA tournament match for consecutive seasons. WVU finishes the season with a 15-3-3 record.
UNCG (16-7-1) advances to the “Sweet 16” round this weekend to face the winner of tonight's No. 11-seeded St. Louis-Northwestern match.
