Gymnastics: Indians Take 5th Annual Turkey Meet

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU gymnastics team held their fifth annual Turkey and Indian intrasquad meet on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The squad broke up into two teams with 18 gymnasts competing in 46 total routines.
The Indians won both the competition and the costume contest held before the start of the meet.
Senior Indian Janáe Cox and junior Turkey Jamie Gold both had an outstanding afternoon as both gymnasts went 4-for-4 in the all-around competition.
Sophomore Mehgan Morris, who became the school’s second gymnast in 11 years of affiliation with the league to earn EAGL rookie of the year honors in 2006, had a strong showing on both the beam and uneven bars.
Junior Katie McGregor had a stellar performance on both the floor exercise and the uneven bars, while senior Cheryl Goldenfield also nailed her floor routine. Senior Tynisha Dennis continued to raise her level of difficulty by successfully adding a full twisting pike double back to her floor routine.
WVU’s newcomers also made impressive first appearances. Freshmen Chelsi Tabor and Ashley Wilson hit all points of emphasis on their bar routines, while freshman Kiersten Spoerke performed well on both the beam and uneven bars.
Other notable performances from the day’s events included, Amie Bouchier’s and Liz Rouse’s performance on the balance beam, Erica Watson’s solid set on the bars and Heather Izer’s results on the both the uneven bars and the vault.
The Mountaineers open the season hosting Michigan and James Madison on Jan. 12, at the Coliseum.
