MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team returns to action when it travels to College Park, Md., to participate in the Terrapin Cup Invitational on Nov. 16 – 18. The three day event is hosted by the University of Maryland at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
Fourteen teams will be competing in the invitational, including BIG EAST foes UConn and Villanova.
“This competition will be good for our swimmers,” says third year coach Sergio Lopez. “They have the opportunity to compete in one of the best facilities in the country and that always helps.”
The Mountaineers have started the 2006-07 season strong. The men’s squad (4-0, 1-0) has dominated opponents this year, including a deep Penn State squad. The team is currently ranked 19th on Swimming World Magazine’s Dual Meet Top 25 Poll.
The women’s squad (3-2, 0-1) has also had a stellar start to the season. The team has established nine school records to date with freshmen Kitti Veisz and Morgan Callaway leading the way.
“We are hoping the invitational will allow us to see where both teams are in relation to their training and also see how the freshmen class has adapted to this part of the season,” says Lopez. “Most importantly, we want to see the chemistry of the team in a three day meet that follows the same format as the BIG EAST and NCAA Championships.”
The Mountaineers will have a two week break from competition following the invitational. They will next host a dual meet against Maryland on Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. in the WVU Natatorium.
