BATON ROUGE, La.- No. 10 LSU used a 36-2 run during a 14-minute span between halves to cruise to a 64-25 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Basketball Traveler’s Classic Sunday afternoon at the Pete Maravich Center in Baton Rouge, La.
The game, which was the season opener for both teams, was competitive for the first 10 minutes. After LSU opened the game with an 8-0 run, the Mountaineers responded with an 8-0 run of their own capped by a LaQuita Owens 3-pointer that tied the game with 11 minutes to play in the first half.
The Mountaineers found it difficult to muster any offense from that point on. For the game, West Virginia shot just 9 of 44 from the floor for 20 percent, including an ice-cold 2 of 16 from 3-point range. They were also just 5 of 13 from the free throw line.
The Mountaineers were also careless with the basketball, committing 24 turnovers against just four assists.
LSU had a 30-10 advantage in points in the paint as 6-6 center Sylvia Fowles dominated play for much of the first half. Fowles led a balanced Tiger offense with 12 points on a perfect 6 of 6 shooting from the floor. Fowles added five rebounds and three blocks to her effort.
Chakhia Cole led West Virginia with 6 points on a day when the five Mountaineer starters comprised of Cole, Ashley Powell, Britney Davis-White, Owens, and Olayinka Sanni combined for just 12 points.
The good news for the Mountaineers is they don’t have to wait long to redeem themselves after the loss. West Virginia (0-1) will play Virginia Tech (0-1) in the second game of this three-game tournament tomorrow evening.
Tip off against the Hokies from the Pete Maravich Center is set for 5:45 p.m. MSN'spre-game coverage begins at 5:30 p.m.
