MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will travel to Lexington, Ky., for a weekend of Great American Rifle Conference competition. The Mountaineers will first take on Nebraska at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. WVU will then face off against Kentucky at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12.
West Virginia (2-1, 1-1) enters this weekend’s competition after an off week. The Mountaineers last faced Army on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Black Knights won the match 4638-4514. Brian Launer recorded the second-highest smallbore score and rifle score of the day. The senior shot 579 points in the smallbore competition and recorded 586 points in air rifle.
Nebraska (2-2) is coming off a 4655-4674 loss to defending NCAA champion Alaska-Fairbanks on Monday, Oct. 30. The Huskers’ wins this season come against Mississippi and Navy. Nebraska placed second last season at the NCAAs as only 16 points separated it from the Nanooks. The team will face Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 10, before taking on West Virginia. The Huskers lead the all-time series with the Mountaineers 2-1.
Kentucky (5-0) won its fifth-straight match as the team defeated Murray State 4648-4594 on Sunday, Nov. 5. The Wildcats seem to be on target to have yet another successful season. In 2006, Kentucky placed first at the NCAA Qualifiers, third at the GARC Championships and seventh at the NCAA Championships. The squad will take on Kentucky before facing off against the Mountaineers. West Virginia has a 13-3 advantage in the all-time series with the Wildcats.
