MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The No. 7 West Virginia University women’s soccer team picked up another road win at Marquette, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 8, at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wisc.
It was the third straight BIG EAST road win for the Mountaineers and third straight shutout against a conference school for the West Virginia defense.
“It’s been a long road stretch with a couple of really tough away games. The girls stepped it up though and got the job done,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said.
WVU (11-1-2, 5-1-1 BIG EAST) pushed its lead to 2-0 in the second half when sophomore Deana Everrett netted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. The penalty was awarded to the Mountaineers after forward Kim Bonilla was taken out by Marquette goalkeeper Laura Boyer in the box on a breakaway.
Everrett’s goal was her 14th of the season, moving her into third all-time in the WVU single season goals list behind Katie Barnes (17 in 2000) and Chrissie Abbott (20 in 2002). The Oakville, Ontario, native now has 14 goals in 14 games which ranks her in the top five in the country in goals per game.
Mountaineer senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman picked up her third straight shutout and her eighth shutout of the season. The Naperville, Ill., native made five saves, including three key saves in the second half to keep Marquette scoreless.
West Virginia carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. In the 28th minute, Amanda Cicchini stole the ball from a Marquette defender and ripped a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box just over the hands of Boyer into the right corner of the net to give West Virginia a 1-0 advantage. Cicchini’s goal was her fourth of the season and the fifth of her career.
Marquette (5-5-4, 3-3-1 BIG EAST) had four shots from forward Allison Mallams and 11 as a team for the game. Boyer had five saves for the Golden Eagles.
WVU has shut out five of its last six BIG EAST opponents and has outscored those teams 14-3 in those games. The match was the final BIG EAST road game of the regular season for the Mountaineers and the win improved WVU’s road record to 5-1-1.
The Mountaineers return to Morgantown atop of the BIG EAST’s American Division for their final four BIG EAST regular season games all at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“We are really excited to finally be home and be in front of our fans,” Izzo-Brown added. “It’s been a long couple of weeks so we can’t wait to get back to play at home.”
West Virginia starts the home stretch with Villanova on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m.
