Volleyball: WVU Defeated by South Florida

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team was defeated by South Florida today at the WVU Coliseum.
South Florida (7-9, 3-1 BIG EAST) won the match 3-1 (30-23, 30-22, 29-31, 30-21).
Game one was a close contest in which West Virginia (1-19, 0-5 BIG EAST) never trailed USF by more than three points until the Bulls pulled ahead 18-14. Despite a good effort to close the gap, the Mountaineers fell 23-30 to USF. Libero Aurora Ebert-Santos recorded seven digs, the highest amount in game one. South Florida’s Kristina Fabris totaled a game-high six kills.
WVU grabbed an early 4-1 lead in game two. The Bulls, fueled by kills from Fabris and Johari Williams, fought back to take the game 30-22. Setter Kailee Goold led West Virginia with nine assists. Goold and Ebert-Santos also totaled seven digs each.
The Mountaineers came out with fire in their eyes in game three. After South Florida went on two separate three-point runs to hold an 8-4 lead, WVU staged an epic comeback. Fueled by early kills from Abby Tevis, Tammy Wolf and Gina Cusanelli, West Virginia battled to tie USF 15-15. The Mountaineers fell behind 17-20, but knew the game was not over. WVU looked to Lisa Hough, Tevis and Wolf for key kills down the stretch. West Virginia triumphed 31-29 over South Florida.
Game four started as a nail biter. The contest was tied six separate times before the Bulls pulled ahead 12-9. West Virginia could not regain momentum and fell 30-21 to USF. Kristina Gallahan, Goold and Ebert-Santos each totaled five digs for the Mountaineers, the highest of the game.
Wolf registered 13 kills in the match, her highest mark of the season. Ebert-Santos recorded 25 digs, the most of the day. This number ties the libero’s highest marks of the season so far. Ebert-Santos also tallied 25 digs against Austin Peay and Akron earlier this season.
West Virginia will return to action tomorrow, Oct. 8, with a 2 p.m. match against Georgetown at the WVU Coliseum.
