MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University Swimming and Diving team opened the 2006-07 season with the annual inter-squad Gold and Blue Relay on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Natatorium. The Gold team walked away with the victory, 294 – 240.
Third year head coach Sergio Lopez was very pleased with his team’s effort, emphasizing that this year’s relay was the best the school has had in the past three years.
“This was a very good practice for the kids,” said Lopez. “Overall, I am very excited for the upcoming season.”
Both the men and women posted impressive times. Several pool records were broken on both sides. In addition, freshman Kitti Veisz, a Budapest, Hungary, native, broke the school records in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
The Gold and Blue Relay is a necessary step in preparing the team for the competitive meets on the horizon. The relay is also useful for developing the freshmen in to strong collegiate swimmers.
The Mountaineers will next compete in the WVU Relay Meet on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 8:30 a.m. in the Natatorium.
