Tennis: WVU Nets 14 Victories on First Day

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team battled for 14 victories on the first day of competition at the Martha Thorn Invitational on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex and the RidgeView Racquet Club.
The team started the day strong with five key doubles victories. Juniors Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz defeated Gombero-Longworthy of Akron, 8-3, in Flight ‘A’. A second team, juniors Monica Lyskawa and Colleen Speaker, also walked away with victory in the Flight ‘A’ bracket, defeating Borza-Friedman of Pitt, 8-5.
Two more doubles victories were secured in the Flight ‘B’ bracket. Seniors Ashley Constantine and Kelly Walsh defeated Craun-Lortie of Morehead State University, 8-1, while freshmen Gabriela Blaskovicova and Stephanie LaFortune defeated Culbertson-Welch of Youngstown State, 8-1. Freshmen Monique Burton and Kathryn Klein also defeated Skopinski-Newman of Robert Morris, 8-3.
Nine victories were notched in the singles action on Friday as well. In the Flight ‘A’ bracket, Prinz defeated Heather Butt of MSU, 6-2, 7-5, Lyskawa triumphed over Gina Peretti of YSU, 6-3, 6-1, and Walsh upended higher seed Jenna Larson of Akron, 6-2, 6-1, to move on to the quarterfinal round.
In Flight ‘B’ action, Percival defeated Hilary Newman of RMU, 6-1, 6-0, and LaFortune breezed past Megan Sammons of MSU, 6-0, 6-0.
The Flight ‘C’ bracket was also good to the Mountaineers. Blaskovicova defeated Laura Hemlepp of Akron, 6-3, 6-4, Burton defeated both Meredeth Lorti of MSU, 6-0, 6-1, and Daniella Phills of Villanova, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3, and Constantine was victorious against Alyssa Carlson of Akron, 6-1, 6-1.
Action resumes Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex. If weather conditions are not acceptable, play will be moved indoors to the RidgeView Racquet Club.
