Volleyball: WVU Hosts BIG EAST Play

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team will host BIG EAST play this weekend at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will face off against South Florida at 2 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 7 and take on Georgetown at 2 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 8.
West Virginia (1-18, 0-4 BIG EAST) is coming off a 1-3 loss to Robert Morris on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The Colonials showed early domination in game one, but WVU retaliated in game two with a five-point scoring run to hoist themselves 13-8 over Robert Morris. The Colonials tried to stage a comeback, but the Mountaineers took game two 30-20. Games three and four were extremely close, but Robert Morris edged out West Virginia 30-27 and 30-26, respectively.
Outsider hitter Abby Tevis recorded 10 kills for the Mountaineers while setter Kailee Goold totaled 33 assists in the contest. On the season, Tevis leads WVU with 3.20 kills per game. Libero Aurora Ebert-Santos heads the defense with 4.21 digs per game while middle blocker Lisa Hough registers .81 blocks per game.
South Florida (6-9, 2-1 BIG EAST) is coming off a 2-3 loss to Marquette on Oct. 1. Outside hitter/defensive specialist Ashley Reavis led the Bulls with 18 kills while middle blocker Kristina Fabris totaled six blocks. On the season, outside hitter Marcela Gurgel leads USF with 4.98 kills per game. Gurgel has also totaled the most points for her team this season, an impressive 314 points in 54 games. The 2006 season marks the second year West Virginia and South Florida have met. Last year, the Mountaineers defeated the Bulls 3-1.
Georgetown (5-10, 0-3 BIG EAST) is coming off a 2-3 loss to Syracuse on Oct. 1. Middle blocker Annie Connor headed the Hoyas attack with 25 kills against the Orange. Setter Kate Fisher totaled 52 assists in the contest while outside hitter Jessica Hardy contributed 20 digs. Connor leads Georgetown this season with 1.05 blocks per game while setter Caitlin Boland adds and average of 5.00 assists per game. Georgetown is 15-8 all-time against the Mountaineers. The Hoyas will face Pitt on Saturday Oct. 7 before traveling to West Virginia.
