MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University track and field coach Jeff Huntoon today announced the 2006-07 indoor and outdoor track schedule.
“I’m really excited about the schedule,” says sixth year head coach Jeff Huntoon. “It’s a little different and I am looking forward to it.”
The squad is set to improve after a competitive 2005-06 outing in which it finished ninth at the BIG EAST Championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Seniors Jessica Czaikowski, Nancy Regalbuto, Alexis Noel, Halimah Bashir and Shani Boone look to lead the Mountaineers to the front of the pack this year.
“I fully expect to score in six event areas this year,” says Huntoon.
The Mountaineers will kick-off the indoor season hosting the Holiday Classic on December 2, in the Shell Building, where as many as 12-15 teams are expected to compete. The squad will also host the State Farm Shell Games on February 3. In between the two home competitions will be a trip to Arkansas for the Arkansas Invitational on January 19-20, in Fayetteville, Ark.
“I hope to have as many as seven or eight kids ranked nationally during the indoor season,” says Huntoon. “We want to get them some exposure and some different opportunities.”
The spring season will be highlighted by the Texas Relays, held on April 4-7, in Austin, Texas. Coach Huntoon is hoping to take a small group down for the event to change things up and compete against different athletes.
The Sea Ray Relays, held on April 13-14, in Knoxville, Tenn., will also be a good measuring stick for the spring squad.
“We feel that we have a team that’s going to be able to use the experience going down there and competing against some of the kids in the South,” says Huntoon.
