MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team remained No. 4 in the NSCAA/adidas coaches Top 25 poll and climbed to third in the SoccerTimes.com Top 25 poll, released Tuesday, Oct. 31.
The Mountaineers (15-1-2) did not move up in the NSCAA poll despite two teams, SMU and Virginia, losing matches last week. Wake Forest holds the top spot in all four major polls this week with the Mustangs and Cavaliers following behind according to the NSCAA.
West Virginia is one of two nationally ranked BIG EAST teams in the coaches’ poll with Notre Dame coming in at No. 12 this week.
WVU jumped two spots according to SoccerTimes.com. The Mountaineers earned another first-place vote, giving them two this week. The team is one of three along with the Demon Decons and SMU to garner a first-place vote.
Coach Marlon LeBlanc’s team has now been in the top five of one or more of the four major polls for the last five weeks and has been the highest ranked BIG EAST team the past eight weeks.
After six days off West Virginia won its BIG EAST quarterfinal match last Saturday, 1-0, at home against South Florida. WVU has now won a postseason match in three consecutive seasons. The 1965, ’66 and ’67 teams are the only other Mountaineer squads to put together such a streak.
The Mountaineers now travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers in the BIG EAST semifinals at Yurcak Field on Friday, Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m. The Scarlet Knights entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the Red Division and defeated Notre Dame, 2-1, in overtime at home on Saturday to advance.
Friday’s match between West Virginia and Rutgers will be broadcast live on CSTV.
