MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team now ranks seventh in the NSCAA/adidas, Soccer America and Soccer Buzz weekly polls after going 1-1 this weekend in a couple of BIG EAST road matches.
The Mountaineers only dropped one spot in the NSCAA coaches’ poll after losing 3-1, at No. 1 and undefeated Notre Dame on Friday, in South Bend, Ind. WVU then routed DePaul 4-0, on Sunday, in Chicago.
The Irish maintained their number one ranking by downing the Mountaineers and beating Pitt, 4-0, over the weekend. Notre Dame is followed by North Carolina, Santa Clara, UCLA, Florida State and Portland in the top six teams in the NSCAA poll.
Both Soccer America and Soccer Buzz have Notre Dame and North Carolina in the top two spots with the four other schools ahead of WVU in varying positions in both polls.
WVU has now been ranked in the NSCAA top 10 for four consecutive weeks while being ranked in a major poll for 47 of the last 49 weeks.
Sophomore Deana Everrett (12 G, 4 A) was named to the weekly BIG EAST honor roll after she tied a school record by scoring three goals in Sunday’s 4-0 win at DePaul. Everrett now ranks fifth in single season scoring in school history with 12 goals. Former All-American Chrissie Abbott holds the record after scoring 20 goals in 2002.
The Mountaineers head to Tampa, Fla., this Friday, Oct. 6, to take on the USF Bulls. WVU then travels for its final BIG EAST regular season road trip of the year at Marquette on Oct. 8, in Milwaukee, Wisc.
West Virginia currently leads the American Division of the BIG EAST standings with 10 points. Both Marquette (4th) and USF (5th) are in the middle of the pack in the BIG EAST’s American Division.
