LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team split its BIG EAST opener with Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Ralph Wright Natatorium. The men’s squad (2-0, 1-0) dunked the Cardinals, 194-104, while the women (0-2, 0-1) fell in a nail biter, 160-140.
Despite the defeat, the women’s team achieved great success, taking first in nine events.
“The girls did another awesome job today by swimming very well in such a close meet,” said third year coach Sergio Lopez.
Freshman Kitti Veisz had another strong showing, winning both the 100 breast (1:03.10) and the 200 breast (2:14.27). Both times are school records. Fellow freshman Morgan Calloway also set a school record in the 100 back (56.92). Calloway was also victorious in the 200 back (2:02.07).
Newcomer Kayla Andrews placed first in both the 50 free (23.69) and the 100 free (50.93). Also earning firsts for the women were freshman Stephanie Shupe (100 fly, 56.59), the 200 medley relay team (1:44.09) and the 200 free relay (1:34.91).
The women have established nine school records in three meets so far this season.
The men’s squad had another stellar day, earning first in 13 of the 16 events.
A slew of Mountaineer men had multiple first place finishes in the victory over the Cardinals. Freshman Zoltan Povazsai placed first in both the 200 free (1:40.43) and the 500 free (4:39.11). Junior Nick Delic swam to a first in the 100 breast (56.01) and the 100 free (45.34). Sophomore Andrew Langenfeld was first in the 50 free (20.56) and the 100 fly (49.14). Fellow sophomore Michael Walker followed with two first of his own, in the 200 back (1:50.21) and the 400 IM (4:04.07).
Freshman Justin Galbreath finished first in the 1000 free (9:37.27), while junior Pablo Marmolejo took first in the 200 fly (1:48.16). Freshman Sean Mahoney was the last individual winner, placing first in the 200 breast (2:03.44). Additionally, both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay teams finished first with times of 1:31.16 and 1:22.45, respectively.
In all, WVU established 12 pool records during the meet.
“I’m very happy with today’s results,” said Lopez. “This was a very good meet for us and both teams are in positions to go far this season.”
Lopez was also pleased with the progress being made by the divers.
"Our divers showed great improvement from the last meet," he said. "They are doing dives this year that they did not think they could be doing and most importantly, they are getting more confident with them. Our diving coach Laura Lunn is doing an outstanding job with this group."
The Mountaineers next travel to Huntington, W.Va., to take on the Thundering Herd of Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 4. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
