MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team ran to a solid sixth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship on Friday, Oct. 27, at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
The squad finished with 158 points. Providence finished first with 39 points. Frances Koon of Villanova placed first out of 148 runners with a time of 20:28.
“We had a great performance today,” said second year coach Sean Cleary. “I started the season feeling that we could finish either seventh or eighth. To finish sixth is just incredible.”
The Mountaineers were led for the second consecutive weekend by true freshman Marie Louise Asselin. The Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, native ran to a 22nd place finish with a time of 21:44. Redshirt freshman Clara Grandt followed Asselin with a 24th place finish at 21:46. Junior Maria Stover rounded out the top three WVU performers with a 35th place finish (22:11).
Today’s finish was a huge improvement for the Mountaineers. The team finished 12th at the 2005 championship with 336 points.
“I think the underlying factor this season is the team’s closeness,” said Cleary. “All nine girls stepped up today and ran hard the whole race.”
The Mountaineers now have two weeks to prepare for their next race. The team will travel to Lock Haven, Pa., on Nov. 11 for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. The race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
