MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team is ready to travel to West Point, N.Y., to take on GARC opponent Army at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.
The Mountaineers (2-0, 1-0) enter Saturday’s contest after a 4547-4444 victory over Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the WVU Rifle Range. West Virginia recorded the top two air rifle scores of the day as junior Lafe Kunkel totaled 576 points and senior Brian Launer recorded 586 points. Launer’s air rifle score tied his career best, a record he set against TCU on Nov. 14, 2004. WVU also boasted three of the top four aggregate scores as Launer summed 1,154 points, Kunkel totaled 1,142 points and sophomore Paul Miller recorded 1,126 points.
“It’s exciting to get on the road,” WVU coach Jon Hammond said. “[Army was] NCAA champions two years ago and they’re one of the strongest teams in the conference. It’ll be a really good match-up to see where we are at this point in the season.”
Army (3-0, 3-0) is coming off a 4661-4524 victory over GARC opponent Memphis on Tuesday, Oct. 17. The Black Knights recorded the highest smallbore score of the day as Chris Abalo shot 583 points. Abalo was also responsible for the highest air rifle total as he summed 594 points. Amy has defeated two of its three opponents this season by 100 points or more.
The Black Knights lead the all-time series with the Mountaineers 28-8.
