Volleyball: WVU Falls to Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Duquesne this evening in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Dukes (9-19) won the match 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-21).
West Virginia (2-24, 1-8) started game one with an early 8-4 advantage. The Dukes recorded four consecutive points to retake the lead 9-8. Assisted by three kills from middle blocker Tammy Wolf, WVU regained a 16-11 lead. Duquesne retaliated with a seven point scoring drive to take an 18-16 advantage over the Mountaineers. The Dukes went on to take game one 30-27.
WVU was down 1-6 early in game two but quickly battled back to tie the contest 8-8. Later in the game Duquesne lit up the scoreboard five times in a row to take the lead. A final kill from outside hitter Mandy Humphrey won the game for the Dukes, 30-26.
The Mountaineers were down 4-5 in game three before registering five consecutive points to take a 9-6 lead over Duquesne. The Dukes answered with an intense ten point scoring drive from which West Virginia was unable to recover. Duquesne took game three by a convincing score of 30-21.
WVU’s Abby Tevis led the Mountaineers this evening with 12 kills, 14 digs and 12.5 points. Middle blocker Lisa Hough recorded three blocks and six kills while setter Kailee Goold totaled 28 assists. Libero Aurora Ebert-Santos also registered 14 digs and setter Gina Cusanelli added 13 digs of her own.
West Virginia will take to the road on Saturday, Oct. 28, for a Noon match against BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall.
