MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team dropped to the No. 8 spot in the latest NSCAA/adidas coaches’ poll this week.
The Mountaineers dropped from sixth to eighth after suffering their first loss in three weeks to division rival Connecticut, 1-0, on Friday. Notre Dame (16-0-1) and North Carolina (17-1-0) tied for the top spot in the poll while UCLA, Santa Clara, Texas A&M, Portland and Florida State all came in ahead of West Virginia.
The BIG EAST had a total of six schools ranked in the top 25. Rutgers ranks 19th in the poll while Connecticut jumped into the No. 22 spot after Friday night’s upset over WVU. BIG EAST rivals Villanova and Louisville also got back into the poll at No. 24 and 25, respectively.
In other polls, West Virginia ranks eighth in Soccer America, eighth in SoccerTimes.com poll and 10th in Soccer Buzz.
WVU locked up the BIG EAST American Division crown with a 4-0 victory over Providence on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
It is just the second time in school history that WVU has won a BIG EAST division title, joining the 2002 team. West Virginia earned a bye through the first round of the BIG EAST tournament and will host the winner of Thursday’s Pittsburgh-Louisville game in a second round game on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m., in Morgantown.
WVU has now made seven straight trips to the BIG EAST tournament and eight overall.
