MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 6 West Virginia University women’s soccer team locked up the BIG EAST American Division crown with a 4-0 victory over Providence on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
It is the second time in school history that WVU has won a BIG EAST division title, joining the 2002 team. West Virginia will get a bye through the first round of the BIG EAST tournament and will host a second round game on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers will face the winner of the Pittsburgh-Louisville game to be played in Louisville, Ky., on Thursday, Oct. 26.
Senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman set the single season shutout record after holding her 11th opponent scoreless this season. Bannerman has 36 career shutouts and didn’t have to make any saves on Providence’s three shots.
The Mountaineers had the game in hand early after Lisa DuCote finished a low cross from Deana Everrett in the ninth minute to put West Virginia up 1-0.
In the 21st minute, sophomore midfielder Greer Barnes’ shot from 30 yards out bounced in off the left post for WVU’s second goal. Kim Bonilla tacked on a third goal in the 33rd minute as West Virginia took a 3-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, Everrett finished off Robin Rushton’s pass to give West Virginia its fourth and final goal of the afternoon, marking the eighth time this season that WVU has scored at least four goals in a game.
WVU outshot Providence 30-3 and had nine corners to the Friars’ two. Providence’s record drops to 4-8-5 overall and 1-8-2 in the BIG EAST.
With the win, West Virginia has now won six of their last seven games and finishes out the regular season with a record of 14-2-2 with an 8-2-1 BIG EAST record. The Mountaineers are 8-1-1 at home this season.
