Volleyball: WVU Falls to Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Syracuse tonight in New York.
The Orange (9-18, 3-5) won the match 3-1 (30-26, 30-22, 32-34, 30-21).
West Virginia (2-22, 1-7) started game one by trailing Syracuse 7-12. Thanks to kills by setter Gina Cusanelli and middle blocker Tammy Wolf, the Mountaineers were able to fight back to 13-14, within just a single point of the Orange. After a five-point scoring drive by Syracuse, WVU again fell behind and was unable to recover. The Orange took game one 30-26.
The Mountaineers started strong in game two with a 6-2 lead over Syracuse. The Orange quickly retaliated to take the lead. A four-point scoring drive by Syracuse closed out the contest 30-22 in favor of the Orange.
Not about to walk away without a fight, WVU battled Syracuse in game three. Middle blocker Lisa Hough, outside hitter Kristina Gallahan and Cusanelli contributed key kills while outside hitter Abby Tevis added back-to-back services aces to keep the Mountaineers close to the Orange. Middle blocker Tammy Wolf recorded the final kill of the game to give West Virginia the 34-32 win.
Game four was tied seven times before Syracuse was able to pull ahead. The Orange recorded seven consecutive points to give themselves an 18-13 lead over the Mountaineers. WVU could not close the gap and fell 21-30 in game four.
West Virginia was led by Tevis’ 18 kills, 19 points and 17 digs. Hough added four blocks while setter Kailee Goold totaled 47 assists, her highest mark of the season. Gallahan hit a season-high 16 kills for the Mountaineers.
WVU will next take on Marquette in a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday, Oct. 22, in Milwaukee, Wis.
