MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team returns to the water on Saturday, Oct. 21, when it travels to Boston, Mass., to compete in the prestigious Head of the Charles.
“I am very excited for this weekend and feel if they race up to their potential they should be able to attain a top 5 finish,” says head coach Nancy LaRocque. “We are bringing a young group but they have proven at home to have some great speed. Our hope is that they can reproduce that on race day.”
WVU is slated to compete in the Club 8 race on Saturday at 12:28 p.m.
The Mountaineers enter Saturday’s competition with plenty of momentum after a solid start to their season on Oct. 7-8. The team’s varsity eight boat grabbed first-place at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh and seventh at the Head of the Genesee the following day.
West Virginia annually attends this fall rowing spectacle that is known as the largest two-day rowing event in the world. The 42-year-old regatta annually attracts more than 7,000 athletes as well as over 300,000 spectators. Over 50 colleges are slated to compete over the weekend.
WVU has had many great performances at the regatta including a second-place finish in the varsity 8+ in 2002 and a fourth-place finish in the collegiate 8 in 2004.
