Rifle: WVU to Host Ohio State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will host a non-conference match against Ohio State at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Mountaineer Rifle Range.
West Virginia (1-0, 1-0) enters Saturday’s match after a 4560-4545 win over GARC opponent Memphis on Monday, Oct. 16. Paul Miller shot a personal best of 582 points in air rifle to help WVU topple Memphis. The Mountaineers also boasted three of the top four smallbore scores in the competition. Amy Smith shot 576 points, Lafe Kunkel recorded 569 points and Brian Launer registered 567 points in the win.
“It’s exciting to have another match so soon and hopefully we’ll keep the momentum going from the first match,” said coach Jon Hammond. “Ohio State is a big university with a lot of tradition. We’ve had a good bit of success against them in the past and hopefully we can keep that going this weekend.”
Ohio State (1-3) enters this weekend’s match after falling to Kentucky and Memphis at the Kentucky Tri-Meet on Saturday, Oct. 14. Steven Nozaki led the Buckeyes with an aggregate score of 1,169. Nozaki totaled 546 in smallbore and registered 573 points in air rifle.
West Virginia leads the all-time series against Ohio State 32-0.
