MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s swim team defeated Penn State 137-104, while the women lost 146.5-96.5 Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Natatorium.
The women’s team (0-1) managed to break two school records in the defeat.
The 400 yard medley relay team finished first with a new school record of 3:46.86. Freshmen Morgan Callaway, Kitti Veisz, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews shaved 2.50 off the previous record, stunning the Nittany Lions in the first race of the day.
Veisz also dominated in her individual races, taking first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:15.12, smashing the previous Mountaineer record by 5.31.
The women had three other first place finishes. Andrews won the 100 free in 50.72, the second fastest time in WVU history. Callaway took first in both the 200 free (1:53.80) and the 200 back (2:03.41).
“The girls did an amazing job today,” said third year head coach Sergio Lopez. “Today’s results are a direct reflection on the hard work the team has put in over the past two years.”
The men’s squad (1-0) walked away with 10 firsts.
Sophomore Michael Walker took the 200 back in 1:50.25, the fourth fastest time in WVU history.
Sophomore All-America Andrew Langenfeld won the 50 free in 20.65.
Junior All-Americans Pablo Marmolejo and Nick Delic also had strong showings. Marmolejo won both the 200 IM (1:52.81) and the 200 fly (1:50.10), while Delic took the 100 free (45.47).
Two freshmen also scored huge for WVU. Zoltan Povazsai finished first in both the 200 free (1:40.60) and the 500 free (4:39.01). Teammate Sean Mahoney edged out junior Felipe Cunha in the 200 breast, 2:05.64 to 2:05.68.
The men swept the relays. Marmolejo, Delic, Langenfeld and freshman Janos Szabo took the 400 medley with a time of 3:19.84. The men also won the exciting 400 free (3:02.14), with Delic, Langenfeld, Povazsai and sophomore Tony Cisneros all contributing.
“The men perform so well because they have so much pride in their team,” said Lopez. “They expect to go places this season.”
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28, when they travel to Louisville, Ky., to take on BIG EAST foe Louisville. The meet will start at 11 a.m.
