Volleyball: WVU Falls to Youngstown State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Youngstown St. this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
The Penguins (9-15) won the match 3-0 (30-20, 30-16, 30-24).
West Virginia (2-21, 1-6) kept it close at the beginning of game one; however, Youngstown St. gained seven consecutive points to lead 11-5. Later, WVU earned three consecutive points to bring themselves within three points of the Penguins. Youngstown St. answered with four consecutive points and went on to win the game 30-20.
A block by Lisa Hough and Delie Marsonek early in game two brought the Mountaineers to within one point of the Penguins with a score of 3-4. Youngstown St. went on to tally four consecutive points and take a commanding 19-8 lead. West Virginia battled back with four consecutive points, but the Penguins regained control and won game two 30-16.
WVU was assisted by key aces from Abby Tevis, Hough and Marsonek, but fell behind 19-29 in game three. The Mountaineers left it all on the court and battled to gain five consecutive points to put themselves behind the Penguins 24-29. Youngstown St. got the last point to take the game, and the match.
West Virginia was led by Tevis’ nine kills and Kailee Goold’s 17 assists. Defensive specialist Tamara De Angelis headed the defense with 11 digs.
West Virginia will next take on the Orange in Syracuse, N.Y. at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20.
