Volleyball: WVU Drops Three to Pitt

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped three games to Pitt this evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The Panthers (16-6, 5-2) won the match 3-0 (31-29, 30-27, 30-22).
Pitt went on a four-point scoring driving early in game one to give themselves an 11-8 lead over the Mountaineers. West Virginia (2-20, 1-6) took a time out and returned to record the next two points, one of which was a block by Gina Cusanelli. The rest of the game was nail biter, but the Panthers pulled ahead 31-29 in the end.
The Mountaineers led Pitt 12-7 early in game two. Pitt answered by recording eight consecutive points to bring the team to a 15-12 advantage over WVU. A service error by the Panthers’ Megan Dooley brought the score to 20-18, in favor of Pitt. West Virginia then went on a three point scoring drive to pull ahead 21-20. The Panthers battled back to win the game by a narrow three point margin.
An early kill from outside hitter Kristina Gallahan and an ace by libero Aurora Ebert-Santos gave the Mountaineers a 3-1 advantage over Pitt in game three. Pitt fought to tie the game 4-4. The contest was tied eight times until the Panthers pulled ahead 16-13. The Mountaineers were not able to recover and fell to Pitt 22-30.
West Virginia was led by outside hitter Abby Tevis’ 10 kills. Setter Kailee Goold recorded 28 assists and middle blocker Tammy Wolf added 10 points. Goold, Cusanelli and middle blocker Lisa Hough totaled two blocks each for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia will return to action at the WVU Coliseum when they take on Youngstown St. at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15.
