MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 6 West Virginia University men’s soccer team looks to stay unbeaten in BIG EAST play when it travels to Washington D.C., to face Georgetown at North Kehoe Field on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers (11-1-2, 6-0-1) enter their match with the Hoyas (5-9-0, 2-6-0) riding a five-match winning streak. The last time a WVU team strung together six wins occurred in 1992 when the team was a member of the Atlantic 10.
Senior forward Jarrod Smith will continue his chase to break the conference goals record as he is just one goal shy of tying Seton Hall’s Michael Magarinos, who scored 11 in 1995. However, he is accompanied in his race by Notre Dame’s Joseph Lapira who has also scored 10 goals. Prior to this season only four players had ever scored double-digit goals in BIG EAST games in a season.
Smith is also just one point shy of the BIG EAST points record of 24 set by Eric Kvello in 1997. Lapira is two points back of Kvello with 22.
Saturday’s match is critical for Georgetown, who is currently on the outside looking in at the conference tournament picture. The seventh-place Hoyas have currently recorded six points in two BIG EAST wins, while Pitt holds the last tourney spot as it sits in sixth-place in the Blue Division with 10 points.
Georgetown has won its last two matches at North Kehoe Field over Howard and Lafayette. GU had defeated WVU in the previous seven matches before last season when the Mountaineers prevailed 1-0 in Morgantown. The Hoyas lead the all-time series 8-2-0.
