Women's Soccer: No. 7 WVU Hosts No. 23 Villanova

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 7 West Virginia University women’s soccer team will host a pair of BIG EAST opponents this weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU will face undefeated No. 23 Villanova on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m., before hosting Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
WVU is tied in the all-time series with Villanova 4-4-4, but has won eight out of the 10 all-time meetings with Georgetown.
Sunday’s match with the Hoyas will be “Dollar Day” with all tickets being sold for one dollar apiece. In addition, 16 oz. Coca-Colas, hot dogs and popcorn will also be sold for one dollar.
No. 7 West Virginia (11-1-2, 5-1-1 BIG EAST) brings one of the nation’s top offenses into the weekend, averaging 3.2 goals per game. Sophomore star forward Deana Everrett leads the country with 14 goals and was named to the BIG EAST honor roll for her two-goal, one-assist performance last weekend.
Senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman and her defense have shut out five of the last six BIG EAST opponents, including three straight road shutouts. Bannerman has eight shutouts on the year and a school record 33 for her career. She also owns a 0.49 goals against average in 14 games and has 39 saves.
No. 23 Villanova (13-0-2, 5-0-2 BIG EAST) comes to Morgantown without a loss this season and hopes to end the Mountaineers’ 13 home match unbeaten streak at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU hasn’t lost a home match since 2004 when Georgetown edged the Mountaineers, 1-0.
Villanova has outscored its opponents at a total of 27-2 while shutting out 13 of its opponents this season. The Wildcats are coming off a pair of 1-0 road victories last weekend at Louisville and Cincinnati.
Goalkeeper Jillian Loyden has 65 saves in 10 shutouts to go with an amazing 0.13 goals against per game average. The Wildcat offense has been paced by Nikki Mabery, who has 11 goals and three assists this season.
Georgetown (4-7-4, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) will be competing in their fourth straight BIG EAST road game against WVU on Sunday. The Hoyas dropped two 1-0 decisions at Cincinnati and Louisville last weekend and travel to Pittsburgh to face the Panthers on Friday. Junior goalkeeper Jade Higgins has 61 saves and is 15 saves away from a school record.
