Volleyball: WVU Drops Three Straight to Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped three games in a row to Rutgers this afternoon.
Rutgers (5-9, 2-2 BIG EAST) won the match 3-0 (30-21, 30-26, 30-28).
The lead changed hands several times early in game one before the Mountaineers (1-17, 0-4 BIG EAST) took over 16-12. The Scarlet Knights answered with an eight point scoring drive to switch the momentum in their favor. Fueled by kills from Lora Yankauskas, Rutgers took game one 30-21.
West Virginia again took a commanding lead early in game two. WVU was up 13-8 before the Scarlet Knights started to battle back. Rutgers fought to tie the game 17-17 and fed off that energy to win game two 30-26.
The Mountaineers worked off of key kills from Tammy Wolf, Gina Cusanelli and Abby Tevis to emerge with a 14-7 lead at the start of game three. Rutgers staged a miraculous comeback to tie the game 21-21. The Scarlet Knights came out victorious in what became a fierce battle to the very end. Rutgers won game three 30-28.
WVU was led by setter Gina Cusanelli’s 11 kills and libero Aurora Ebert-Santos’ 14 digs. Setter Kailee Goold registered 30 assists while outside hitter Abby Tevis and middle blocker Delie Marsonek recorded two blocks each.
West Virginia will return to the WVU Coliseum Wednesday, Oct. 4, for a 7 p.m. match against Robert Morris.
