CHICAGO – Sophomore Deana Everrett tied a school record by scoring three first half goals as the No. 6 West Virginia University women’s soccer team defeated DePaul, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 1, at Wish Field in Chicago. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
The Oakville, Ont., Canada, native’s hat trick is the second by a Mountaineer player this year and ties her with six other players with the most goals in a single match in WVU history. West Virginia is now 10-0-1 when Everrett scores in a game.
Everrett scored goals in the 16th, 26th and 44th minutes and Lisa DuCote added another goal in the 71st minute for the Mountaineers.
WVU could have scored another in the game’s sixth minute but DePaul goalkeeper Cara LaRocca guessed correctly and saved senior Cathy Abel’s penalty kick to keep the game scoreless early.
West Virginia (9-1-2, 3-1-1 BIG EAST) dominated the first half of play, tallying 20 shots while holding the Blue Demons to just two shots on the other end. The Mountaineers would finish the afternoon with 28 shots (15 on goal), while the Blue Demons had eight.
WVU’s Lana Bannerman recorded three saves and picked up her sixth shutout of the season. She now has 31 shutouts for her career.
DePaul (3-8-1, 0-5 BIG EAST) goalkeeper LaRocca finished with 11 saves for the Blue Demons.
Everrett now has a team-high 12 goals on the year, ranking her near the top of the conference and the country. Her 12 goals this season are tied for fifth all-time in a single season in school history. She now averages one goal per game.
The Mountaineers return to action against South Florida on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m., in Tampa, Fla.
