MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams fell to BIG EAST foe Pitt on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the WVU Natatorium.
The men lost 133-104 while the women fell 164-79.
"I am very impressed with the way this team swam today," head coach Sergio Lopez said. "With all the traveling we have done and just getting back two days ago, these kids have done a great job of adjusting."
Highlighting for the Mountaineers were two freshmen, Lindsey Largo and Scottie Norton. Largo won the 1000 free in a time of 10:20.65, while also placing second in the 500 free (5:10.94). Norton was able to pull out a win in the 500 free in a time of 4:40.71 and finished second in the 1000 free (9:36.87).
"That win for Scottie was huge," Lopez said. "He's just a walk-on and he was able to beat swimmers that competed in the Olympic trials."
Senior Chris Hagedorn racked up a victory in the 50 free in a time of 20.64. Sophomore Pablo Marmolejo continued his dominance in the 200 fly by grabbing first place (1:51.66). Sophomore Felipe Cunha got another win for West Virginia as he placed first in the 200 breast in a time of 2:04.51.
On the women's side, freshman Meghan Fiene won the 200 breast (2:26.53). Sophomore Erica Pfeiffer dove well, grabbing first in the 3 meter with a total of 251.25 points.
In the final event of the day, the men's 400 free relay, Hagedorn, freshman Andrew Langenfeld, senior Rick Mann and sophomore Nick Delic finished first in a time of 3:05.77, more than 10 seconds ahead of the next team.
The Mountaineers hit the road for two meets next weekend. West Virginia will take on St. Bonaventure on Friday, Jan. 13, and then swim at Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 14, at noon.
"Hopefully in the next few days, we can get in the pool to make some adjustments and be ready for next weekend," Lopez said.
