MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will close out their regular season when they play host to BIG EAST rival Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. at the WVU Natatorium.
The Mountaineer men (5-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) and women (5-4, 2-2 BIG EAST) are both coming off losses to Virginia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Hokies defeated the men 125-112 and the women 148-88.
Despite the losses there were good individual efforts put forth by WVU swimmers. Sophomore Pablo Marmolejo broke his own pool record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.81. The men's 400 free relay team came up big in the last event of the day to win and set a new pool record of 3:02.25. Seniors Chris Hagedorn, Rick Mann, freshman Andrew Langenfeld and sophomore Nick Delic combined for the record time.
Hagedorn continued to swim fast in the 50 free as he won in a time of 20.23 and also finished first in the 100 free (45.61). Sophomore Felipe Cunha grabbed first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.12. Freshman Isabel Perez won the 200 breast (2:23.45).
Both Connecticut teams enter the meet having defeated Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 21. The men's team won 182-118 and continue to stay undefeated at 5-0 and 4-0 in the BIG EAST. The women won 179-120, pushing their record to 3-2 and 2-2 in the BIG EAST.
"This should be a very interesting meet for us," head coach Sergio Lopez said. "It's the last chance for them to race well before BIG EAST championships. We only need seven more swimmers to qualify for BIG EAST and we'll be able to take the whole team."
