MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University men’s soccer player Devon McTavish was drafted in the fourth round of the Major Legue Soccer (MLS) supplemental draft yesterday evening, while rising senior forward Jarrod Smith was named to the New Zealand national team.
D.C. United selected McTavish with the seventh pick, 43rd overall, in the league’s annual supplemental draft. Last season Aaron Pitchkolan became the first Mountaineer to be drafted by an MLS team as he was taken by F.C. Dallas in the second round of the supplemental draft.
McTavish wrapped up his career at WVU in 2005 finishing third all-time in career matches played with 75. As a defender he was an instrumental part in the Mountaineer back line that recorded a team-record 12 shutouts last season. For his efforts he was named to the 2005 third team all-BIG EAST and third team all-Mid Atlantic teams.
McTavish showed the ability to play every position on the field at West Virginia besides goalkeeper. The Winchester, Va., native scored 13 goals and four assists in his four years.

Smith was named to the New Zealand national team this week along with nine other newcomers to the team. The Havelock North, New Zealand, native has previous international experience after competing on his homeland’s U-23 national team in 2004 that fell short of qualifying for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
One of the Mountaineers’ most versatile forwards, Smith was named to the second team all-BIG EAST squad after leading the team with eight goals. He also recorded two assists. Smith leads all current Mountaineers with 18 career goals.
