MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will compete in its home opener on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. when the Mountaineers (1-3) host North Carolina State (4-0) at the WVU Coliseum.
The meet features the third and sixth ranked teams in the eight-team East Atlantic Gymnastics League, according to NC State’s season average of 189.787 and West Virginia’s season average of 189.4.
NC State is looking for its first-ever win over West Virginia in Morgantown in eight trips as the two teams meet for the 27th time in series history and the ninth time in the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia is coming off a third-place finish (190.675 team score) last Saturday at No. 7 Penn State with No. 2 Michigan and Cornell. Michigan won the meet with a 194.825.
The meet signified a statistical anomaly in the 33-year history of WVU gymnastics, as the Mountaineers competed in a meet for the first time without an all-around gymnast.
Freshman Erica Watson and junior Janàe Cox are expected to return to the WVU lineup in all four events as all-arounders on Saturday after recovering from injuries. Watson and Cox were limited to two and three events, respectively, last week as a precaution.
