Rifle: Launer, Smith Shine as WVU Wins Two

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team collected two wins over the weekend. The Mountaineers won a triangular match on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Akron with Texas Christian by posting a 4603 aggregate score.
The Mountaineers (3-6) won both disciplines with a smallbore score of 2299 and an air rifle sum of 2304, the latter just three points off their season high.
TCU took second in the tri-match with a 4535 aggregate (2243 smallbore, 2292 air) and Akron finished last with an 4503 aggregate (2261 smallbore, 2242 air).
Junior Brian Launer won the smallbore competition and tied a personal best with a score of 583.

Sophomore Amy Smith also fired a personal best by winning the air rifle discipline with a 583. Smith also placed second in smallbore shooting a season-high 579.
Sophomore Lafe Kunkel and freshman Paul Miller tied for third-place in air rifle with a pair of 577s.
WVU returns to action Feb. 4 for a non-conference match at Ohio State beginning at 8 a.m.
