Swimming: WVU Wins Big Over Cincinnati

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams defeated BIG EAST foe Cincinnati on Friday, Jan. 20, at the WVU Natatorium.
The men (5-2) were victorious over the Bearcats, 118-85, while the women (5-3) won 118.5-80.5.
"We had great times overall from everyone," head coach Sergio Lopez said. "I'm very impressed with the way they swam today."
The women got the meet started with a win in the 200 medley relay. Freshmen Taylor Stallings, Meghan Fiene, Natalie Lautzenheiser and Rachel Fedyk combined for the winning time of 1:49.11. In the next event, the men came out with a win in the 200 medley relay, with senior Rick Mann, sophomores Nick Delic, Pablo Marmolejo and freshman Andrew Langenfeld swimming to a 1:33.65 winning time.
Senior Chris Hagedorn broke his own school record in the 50 free with a time of 20.08.
"Chris has gone through a lot of changes with his training in the last year and I think that has helped him to swim better," Lopez said. "He's swimming very fast right now."
The Mountaineers got two victories from Marmolejo who won the 400 IM (4:00.29) as well as the 100 fly (49.54). Also getting two wins for West Virginia was freshman Scottie Norton who placed first in the 1650 free (16:31.21) as well as grabbing the top spot in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.08. Hagedorn got his second win of the evening in the 100 free (45.80), while Langenfeld came in third (47.12). Delic was victorious in the 100 breast with a winning time of 57.97.
For the women, West Virginia got wins from multiple swimmers. Freshman Lindsey Largo won the grueling 1650 free with a time of 17:26.65. Freshman Rachel Fedyk won her third straight 50 free (24.21), while sophomore Erin Tudor came in second (24.35) and won the 100 free (52.67). Sophomore Tina Gabrillo grabbed the top spot in the 400 IM (4:28.10, while Lautzenheiser finished second in the 100 fly (57.77). Stallings and Gabrillo took first and second in the 100 back with times of 58.64 and 59.73, respectively. Fiene claimed the top spot in the 100 breast (1:07.07), while senior Olga Tzinker finished just behind in second (1:07.46).
The Mountaineers return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 21, as they face off against Virginia Tech at noon.
