MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will travel to Akron on Saturday, Jan. 21, for a triangular match with the host Zips and Texas Christian. The first relay begins at 8 a.m.
West Virginia (1-6) is coming off losses against some of the top teams in the country with setbacks to Nebraska (4653-4596) and Alaska-Fairbanks (4662-4578) on Jan. 16 and 14, respectively. Both of those opponents are undefeated this year, including the No. 1-ranked Alaska-Fairbanks team.
The Mountaineers defeated TCU last year in an air rifle only match last year in Morgantown, 2307-2210. The Horned Frogs are 5-0 in dual matches this year, including their last match, a 2267-1785 air rifle win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Nov. 13.
West Virginia meets Akron for the first time since 1969. The Zips are competing as a split squad this year, as their Gold team compiled a 4557 aggregate score in a loss to Navy on Jan. 17.
