MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team opens up EWL competition on Friday, Jan. 20, when it hosts Bloomsburg at 7 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (1-4) are coming off of a 1-2 weekend at the Virginia Duals from Jan. 13-14 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. All three dual meets were extremely close as WVU opened the tourney with a 21-18 win over Rider and then dropped a 17-15 match to Ohio State and a 20-16 match to Columbia in the consolation bracket.
Senior Matt Lebe (157) and freshman David Jauregui (149) both won all three of their matches against opponents at the Virginia Duals. Jauregui’s efforts earned him EWL wrestler of the week honors after knocking off No. 7-ranked Jeffrey Jaggers.
Freshman Brandon Rader (141) went a perfect 2-0 last weekend but suffered an injury to his shoulder that forced him to sit out of Saturday’s match against Columbia. His participation in this weekend’s competition is doubtful as he continues to recover. Kyle Turnbull (125) and heavyweight Dustin Rogers are also not expected to compete due to injuries.
The Huskies (7-4) also competed at the Virginia Duals, coming away with a 1-2 record as well. 125-pounder Mike Sees leads Bloomsburg with 15 wins on the season, however, an injury may keep him out of action on Friday night. Brad Forbes (141) and Aric Furhman (157) rank second on the team in wins with 13 apiece.
The Mountaineers lead the all-time series between the two schools with a 14-11 mark. WVU’s last loss to the Huskies came in 2001 on the road.
