MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team welcomes Alaska-Fairbanks to the Mountaineer Rifle Range for non-conference match on Saturday, Jan. 14, beginning at 8 a.m.
This will be the first match of the spring semester for the Mountaineers (1-4). West Virginia, averaging a team score of 4,560.6 through five meets, is led by junior Brian Launer’s 576.8 smallbore average and 574.2 air rifle average.
The Nanooks (6-0), NCAA champions for six straight years from 1999-2004, feature a lineup with two athletes that shoot for the U.S. National Team in junior Matt Rawlings and senior Jamie Beyerle. Rawlings is the two-time defending national champion in smallbore.
Alaska-Fairbanks will also have the services of Erin Skeuse, a two-time All-American, for the first time this year.
West Virginia owns the all-time series, 4-2, but Alaska-Fairbanks won last year’s match in Morgantown, 4,677-4,550. The Nanooks have only shot below 4,700 once this year and their season high is 4,721. The Mountaineers’ high team score this year is 4,590 shot in a win over NC State on Nov. 13.
