MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s gymnastics team opens its 2006 regular season at No. 11. Auburn on Friday, Jan. 13, beginning at 8 p.m. EST, at the Beard-Eaves Coliseum.
The Mountaineers, who received votes in the preseason coaches’ poll, are coming off their 27th postseason appearance in the last 28 years. The meet at Auburn begins a tough schedule for the Mountaineers that includes three road meets where they will compete against five teams that placed in the Top 25 of the final 2005 rankings.
Auburn (4-1) is coming off a fifth-place finish in the Super Six Challenge hosted by LSU on Friday, Jan. 6, as the Tigers, with a 193.675 team score, finished just .575 behind meet champion No. 5 Alabama.
West Virginia competes against Auburn for the eighth time since the series began in 1986. This will be the first time the two squads will meet in a two-team meet since 1990 (an Auburn win in Auburn, Ala.). The Tigers own a 4-3 series lead including a close 194.9-194.6 win over the Mountaineers last year at the WVU Coliseum on March 6.
