MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University cross country team will open the season this Saturday, Sept. 10, when the Mountaineers travel to Fairfax, Va., to compete in the Hoya Invitational.
“We are anxious to get started this weekend and see where we are as a team after a great summer training,” head coach Sean Cleary says.
Senior Susan Davis returns to lead a young group of runners that are anxious to prove themselves during the 2005 season. Davis placed 25th overall in 2004 at the BIG EAST championships and finished 13th at the mid-Atlantic regionals, helping WVU to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2000.
“For Susan, this is the first step in her quest to be an individual NCAA qualifier,” Cleary says. “She has had a good summer training and we are anxious to see were her current fitness is.”
The Mountaineers are fresh off of their best season in school history after winning the school’s first mid-Atlantic regional championship in 2004, while also placing 15th at the NCAA Championships. Cleary was named 2004 mid-Atlantic coach of the year after the team’s performance at the regional.
