MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 10h-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team downed visiting 23rd-ranked Tennessee, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
WVU freshman Deana Everrett scored her second goal of the season to even West Virginia’s record to 2-2-0 on the year.
Fellow freshman Amanda Cicchini started the play by sending a through ball to the top right corner of the Tennessee 18 yard line in the 29th minute and a charging Ashley Banks picked up the pass, beat two Lady Vols defenders and sent a perfect square ball into the center of the six-yard box. Everrett one-timed the ball past Tennessee keeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart for the score.
"This was a total team effort,” said 10th year head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We battled, finished our opportunities and held under pressure. I’m very proud of how our girls responded today.”
The two schools battled throughout the contest, each team having four shots on goal.
The Lady Vols best chance at evening the match came with 18 minutes remaining in the contest when action in the box forced WVU goalkeeper Lana Bannerman off her line, leaving an open goal. UT forward Jackie Acevedo rifled a shot toward the Mountaineer goal, but freshman defender Robin Rushton was there to head the ball out of danger, protecting WVU’s lead.
Today’s victory is Lana Bannerman’s first shutout of the season and the 17th of her career. Bannerman also had three saves in the contest.
"Lana Bannerman had a great game today,” Izzo-Brown added. “She made great decisions coming off her line and kept us in the game.”
West Virginia is now 2-0 at home this season.
With the loss, Tennessee falls to 0-3-0 on the year.
The Mountaineers are next in action at the Nike Invitational in Portland, Ore., when West Virginia battles No. 20 Washington at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 9, and No. 4 Portland at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. Both times are Eastern.
