MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team won the Labor Day Shootout Presented by Jerseys Subs by knocking off Temple 2-0 on Saturday evening in Morgantown, W.Va.
"We had two great wins and won our first tournament," said WVU head coach Mike Seabolt. "We felt like we played very good soccer for 135 minutes this weekend. The first half of the Temple game wasn't our best half but we rebounded very well."
The Mountaineers (2-0-0) finished the tournament with wins over the Owls (0-2-0) and a 2-0 decision over Campbell (1-1-0) on Thursday evening.
WVU got on the board in the 25th minute of play when freshman forward Zak Boggs stole the ball from a defender that was guarding him and ripped a goal past goalkeeper Bryant Hosler from 25 yards out. The goal marked the Vienna, W.Va., native's first collegiate goal.
Fellow forward Jarrod Smith added the team's second goal to the scoreboard in the 68th minute of play. After missing a goal opportunity right in front of goal less than a minute earlier Smith took a pass from teammate Dan Stratford and wove his way inside the box to slide a low rolling shot from the right side of the goal across the field to the side left netting.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Noble recorded his second shutout of the season by making four saves. Hosler allowed both WVU goals and tallied four saves.
The 2-0 victory over Temple marks the first time since 1999 that the Mountaineers have won back-to-back games by two games or more. The last time it occurred West Virginia defeated Providence (2-0), George Mason (3-1) and Syracuse (4-2) in a row. It also marked the first time that WVU has beaten Temple in seven tries.
The Mountaineers avoided being named co-champions of the tournament when Campbell knocked off Marshall (1-1-0) 6-1. The Camels were led by brothers Willy and Sonny Guadarrama who combined for five goals and two assists in the match. Older brother Willy netted four goals, while Sonny chipped in with one goal and two assists, both to Willy.
"We would really like to thank all of the teams for coming to the tournament and wish them the best during the rest of their respective seasons," said Seabolt. "We would also really like to thank our sponsor Jerseys Subs for their great work as well."
WVU returns to action at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium when they host Wright State on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m.
