Women's Tennis: WVU Successful at Maryland Invite

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The West Virginia University women's tennis team had a strong finish at the Maryland Invite on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, in College Park, Md.
"Our girls were able to get wins over Notre Dame, Yale, Washington State and Maryland, which are all top 60 teams," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "This is the best we've ever competed at the Maryland Invite and it shows great promise for our season."
Sophomore Monica Lyskawa finished third overall in her flight with a 3-1 record. She had key victories over No.1 seed Aimee Kim from ivy league powerhouse Yale and No.3 seed Veronicka Subertova from top ACC contender Maryland.
Junior Catherine Koontz finished 2-1 on the weekend by defeating Kara Kanomos and Tessa Hollyn Taub, both from Washington State, one of the top teams in the Pac-10.
Junior Ashley Constantine went 2-2 in the tournament with victories over Washington State's Ashley Flynn and Yale's Karolina Grygierowska.
"Ashley played extremely well and showed a lot of determination this weekend," Silverstein said. "We look to see great things from her in the future."
In doubles action, the Mountaineers went 8-3 on the weekend. The duo of Stacey Percival and Colleen Speaker went undefeated with a wins over Yale, 8-5, and Washington State, 8-4. Senior Raynie Theis and sophomore Natalia Prinz went 2-1, with junior Kelly Walsh and Lyskawa finishing 2-1 as well. The Constantine-Koontz pair finished 2-1, also.
"Our doubles have been great and the team unity is better than ever," Silverstein said. "I am so proud of these young women."
The Mountaineers return to action as they host the Martha Thorn Invitational October 7-9.
